January 10, 2014

For the first day in what seems to be forever, the thermometer showed a positive number when I got up this morning. Hopefully we’ve seen the worst of the cold weather for the winter now, and we can get out and enjoy the snowy world we live in. I’ve been itching to get the snowshoes out and pack down the trails around our 19 acres, and check out where the deer have been moving through. Maybe snap some photos; there’s a light hoar frost this morning, and we’re not likely to see the sun today, but that’s okay.

Between the house and the shop, we’ve gone through 3 or 4 face cords of oak already this winter, and we’re going through the LP like crazy as well. We’ll need to rethink the amount of wood we cut and split this spring to make sure we’re ready if next winter brings the same bite.

The warm up has me excited about getting outside and enjoying the snow, but it also is a reminder that eventually spring will be here. This morning I pulled the bikes down from their hangers in the shop so we can start riding our trainers and getting back in shape for when the roads clear and we can begin to ride outside again. Should’ve done that a couple weeks ago; could’ve been riding inside during this cold snap!
